The Essential Information About Energy Metabolism

Energy metabolism is a series of chemical reactions that transform food into energy.  Part of this energetic production is given away as body heat, another part is used for normal functions and only 20% is believed to remain stored in the cells. As it may have become obvious for many of us, when going to the gym and working out our bodies heat a great deal especially if we try our best to exercise correctly and follow the instructor’s guidelines precisely. This kind of heat is what we normally call energy metabolism.

For a better understanding of energy metabolism, one needs first to grasp the role of ATP in our bodies. ATP the abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate is a chemical compound that is responsible for the huge amount of energy that our bodies supply on. For example, during hard physical exercise we may reach a level at which we simply stop functioning in an optimum manner and this is where ATP comes into the picture. This chemical compound is broken down and used as fuel to help the body function at the required parameters even when it is pushed beyond its normal limits. The body cells store ATP the way a bank stores money, and a rudimentary parallel could be made in the functional model as well.

So, energy metabolism also involves the necessity to rebuild the ATP reserve in the cells after energetic consume. In other terms ATP works as food for cells and, naturally, once that food is consumed, they need new supplies. To put it in different words, cells need to rebuild themselves the molecules of ATP which they need to use not only at the beginning of intense physical activity but also throughout it.

Consequently, energy metabolism represents the opposite of fat metabolism. Fat metabolism is responsible for obesity while energy metabolism for the system’s vitality and capacity to perform in daily tasks. In addition, the enemy of energy metabolism is lack of physical exercise.

Canada and many other countries have started focusing on energy metabolism to understand how a human being can stay healthier and more active over longer periods of time. Research should make us understand how energy gets stored in the cells, and hopefully, this will happen very soon in the future. Healthier and healthier diets will appear, and people will learn  how to increase metabolism and improve the energetic functions of their bodies.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

At least 58 million Americans have suffered Irritable Bowel Syndrome at some stage in their lives. They have cramp like abdominal pains, diarrhoea and/ constipation. Jeffrey Roberts, president of the IBS Self Help and Support Group, says, “IBS is an illness which seems to strike people down.”

IBS is a collection of symptoms that are present for 12 weeks in twelve month period. It is characterised by abdominal pain and must include at least two of the following three facts. The pain is relieved with bowel movement, and associated with a change in the frequency of bowel movement and appearance of the stools.

Certain foods and stress can trigger symptoms or cause a flare up of IBS. Experts are still uncertain as to what exactly Irritable Bowel syndrome is or what causes it. What we knowat present is the Large Gut in IBS sufferers are more sensitive and, hormonal changes may be a trigger because 80% of IBS patients are women. There is higher incident in individuals who were physically or sexually abused as children and it can develop after a severe bout of gastroenteritis.

In IBS, there is no abnormality in the gut even though you have distressing symptoms such as abdominal pains, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and rectal pain. If during investigation an abnormality is found, then the diagnosis in no longer IBS.

If you have symptoms of IBS, see your doctor for a diagnosis. Your doctor is likely to do tests to exclude major ilness before a diagnosis of IBS is made. A diagnosis can be made using the Rome Criteria with minimal diagnostic test. However, if you have bleeding from the rectum, loss of appetite, weight loss, anaemia or symptoms developing after fifty years of age, you should see your doctor very soon because you will need addition investigation.

Some IBS sufferers think their illness is “All in the head.” This is far from the truth but the brain has a role in symptom development and there is a strong belief that Brain-Gut connection is very important. IBS and Serotonin are linked. Low blood levels are found in Constipation predominant IBS and high levels are present in Diarrhoea predominant IBS.

We know that in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the gut is normal, it is not a cancer and will not lead to cancer or other gastrointestinal disease and it is very common. It is estimated that at some time in their lives as much as 20% of the global population has or had IBS.

It is very difficult for IBS patients to come to terms with this condition especially when they are told no one knows the true cause, no one treatment works for everyone and that there is no cure. Depending on the type of IBS you have, dietary changes, stress management, behavioural therapy and various alternative treatments options are available.

Some IBS patients have severe abdominal pains soon after eating certain foods. This may be because it is a large meal and in a sensitive gut triggers strong Gastro-colic reflex. This a powerful peristaltic contraction in response to stretching of the stomach. In IBS patients, this can be very painful. It is better to have smaller meals and eat frequently. It is important that you do not avoid foods. You need important nutrients to remain healthy.

Stress is a trigger for IBS symptoms. Relieve stress and your IBS will improve.
